Collections Management Assistant

For the upcoming summer season, the Randall House Museum is seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented candidate to fill the role of Collections Management Assistant. This season, the Society will be undertaking a project to increase community engagement with its collection by identifying artifacts that have strong provenance and highlighting those stories to in-person visitors and to the broader community online. The second goal of this project would be to identify artifacts that are no longer serving the mandate of the museum in order to process them for deaccessioning. Over the next two years, the Society’s aim will be to pare down the Museum’s existing collection in order to make room for items that represent a wider span of time that better reflects our diverse community.

The candidate’s role in this central project will be to work with the Curator and the Collection Review Committee to help identify and categorize the artifacts and then to help in their appropriate processing. This process includes reviewing the database,

cataloging, scanning and/or photographing non-digitized objects, performing additional research, and entering/removing this information onto the Collective Access database. In addition to digitizing artifacts the successful candidate will assist the Curator with cleaning the database which can entail removing duplicate records, correcting problems found in the database, updating existing records, as well as entering paper records into the database. They will also assist the Curator with loan reconciliation following a framework that has been set out by the Association of Nova Scotia Museums that will also lead to creating space in the storage areas of the museum. Once items with strong provenance are identified, the candidate will be involved in raising awareness of those stories through creating social media content using Facebook and Instagram, and the WHS website as their platforms.

From time to time the candidate may be required to participate in additional duties that may include program / event planning and implementation, providing guided tours, cleaning, historical and genealogical inquiries, etc.
