Heritage Interpreter & Program Assistant

The Randall House Museum is seeking an enthusiastic and outgoing student with an interest in local history to help share the story of Wolfville and its surrounding community by serving as a Heritage Interpreter & Program Assistant.

About the Museum:

Open five days a week from June through early September, Randall House is owned by the Wolfville Historical Society and welcomes tourists, researchers, and locals to explore exhibits from a collection of over 6,000 artifacts and participate in community programming.

The Role:

Working under the direction of the Curator/Manager, you’ll take on a dual role that combines work as a Heritage Interpreter with public programming.

  • As a Heritage Interpreter, you will be responsible for ensuring visitors have an engaging, informative, and enjoyable experience through the interpretation of the museum’s permanent and temporary exhibitions. You will gain experience in heritage interpretation, storytelling, and visitor engagement while learning best practices in museum operations and public history.
  • As the Programs Assistant, you will work in partnership with the Museum’s program committee to deliver workshops and outreach programming. This will include assisting with the planning and delivery of public programs, working collaboratively with the Town of Wolfville Recreation Department. You will help to create, organize, and implement programs that reach targeted yet diverse audiences. You will gain practical experience in event coordination, partnership development, marketing support, and community engagement. From time to time, you will also assist with other duties, which may include exhibit research, developing and delivering interpretive programs, maintaining visitor attendance records, general housekeeping, and conducting retail sales.

Candidate Profile:

The Randall House Museum is looking for a university or college level student pursuing further studies. The candidate should have an interest in or experience with the following:

  • Local history and heritage
  • Community engagement and public programming
  • Event coordination and partnership development
  • Marketing and public outreach including social media content creation
  • Collections management and handling artifacts/archival materials
  • Understanding of Microsoft platform, file management, Photoshop or Canva
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work independently
  • Strong writing and editing skills (including reading cursive)
  • Flexibility and willingness to support a range of museum tasks

 

Candidate Eligibility:

  • Must be a full-time student enrolled in an accredited post-secondary institution or a graduating Grade 12
  • Be a student who is registered full-time in a university or college program for the upcoming fall term.
  • Must be a permanent resident of Nova Scotia or have resided in the province for at least six months prior to the start of employment.

*There may be some possibility for weekend work in Sept and October for those who are interested and available, but this is not required and is separate from the Provincial funding program.

Workdays: Thursday to Monday (Museum is closed on Tues and Wed)

Hours of Work: 9am – 5pm (1 hr off for lunch)

Work Period: 14 weeks

Wage: $17.50/hr, 35 hrs per week

Collection Management & Programs Assistant

Interested in history, storytelling, and meaningful summer work? Are you detail-oriented, digitally savvy, and comfortable working with people?

Randall House Museum is seeking a Collections Management & Programs Assistant for the summer season. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with historic collections while helping deliver engaging programs for the community.

About the Museum:

The Role:

  • As the Collections Management Assistant, the candidate will be responsible for collection related tasks such as, handling and conserving artifacts, database maintenance, digitizing artifacts, reconciling old loans, and creating social media content that highlights objects in the collection.
  • As the Programs Assistant, the candidate will work in partnership with the Museum’s program committee to deliver workshops and outreach programming to the community. The candidate will help to create, organize, and implement programs that reach targeted yet diverse audiences. From time to time, the assistant will help with other tasks that may include responding to historical/genealogical inquiries, conducting guided tours, general housekeeping, and conducting retail sales.

 

Candidate Profile:

The Wolfville Historical Society is looking for a university or college level student pursuing further studies. The candidate should have an interest in or experience with the following:

  • Local history
  • Community service
  • Collections management practices including, handling artifacts and archival material
  • Understanding of Microsoft platform, file management protocol, Photoshop or Canva
  • Creating Social Media content for Facebook, Instagram and YouTube
  • Experience in photography and videography
  • Attention to detail and appreciation for the need for quality control
  • Ability to meet set deadlines
  • Strong writing and editing skills including the ability to read cursive writing
  • The ability to take instruction and then work independently
  • Flexibility and willingness to take on small additional tasks as may be required by museum staff

Candidate Eligibility:

  • Must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible)
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must be between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment
  • Are a full-time high school, college, CEGEP or university student (as defined by their educational institution)
  • MUST register on the YCW site and must also meet the Eligibility Requirements set out by the Young Canada Works Program.
